“Sarsaparilla” is an ambient-jazz album made by longtime friends and collaborators, Corey Gordon & Nathanial Young. The record is seeded with ephemeral jazz improvisation alongside droning synths and understated acoustic guitar. Using a recording technique called “sound-on-sound”, “Sarsaparilla” brings the ambient tape looping language into the realm of improvised jazz music. The grainy sound of tape-kissed saxophone, Fender Rhodes, acoustic guitar, and synth populate the sometimes arid, yet comforting musical environment.
